THE LITERACY COUNCIL OF SARASOTA (LCS), CELEBRATING 31 YEARS OF SERVICE TO SARASOTAAbout 1 in 5 people are functionally illiterate in the Sarasota area.

More than 2.6 million adults in Florida - or 20 percent of those 16 and older -
lack even the most basic reading skills, according to estimates by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). About 1 in 5 adults are functionally illiterate in the Sarasota area. Since 1978, The Literacy Council Sarasota (LCS) has been helping adults (16 years of age and older) improve their basic reading, writing, comprehension and communication skills through one-on-one and small group tutoring. LCS customizes teaching to individual needs, providing a unique focus on enabling adult learners to function better within the frameworks of their own life situations.

Today, we continue our vital mission of building a more literate Sarasota, with the help of more than 250 volunteers and tutors who work with adult learners one-on-one at no cost. The Literacy Council of Sarasota's office is housed at the Glasser Schoenbaum Human Service Center in Sarasota, FL.

With the generous help of donors, we are able to provide these services:

  • Workplace Literacy Program
  • Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE)
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
