MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY
LCS
volunteers are important to the effective delivery of programs to adults and
to the daily functioning of the organization. Volunteers have a special
opportunity to change lives. Increasing the reading, writing, and English-speaking skills enables
LCS students to get better jobs, enjoy a more
fulfilling lifestyle, and make a positive impact on future generations.
Some of the many benefits of being an LCS volunteer include:
-
Volunteer hours are flexible to meet your needs.
-
Volunteers receive training for the work they will do for
LCS.
-
Volunteer tutors receive excellent support and training in
the use of proven instructional methods.
-
Volunteer tutors meet at locations that are convenient for
them and their learners.
-
Volunteers feel valued for providing important support for
an organization with goals in which they believe.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
LCS
has a variety of volunteer opportunities available to individuals who are
committed to building a more literate community. They include:
-
Basic literacy tutors
who are willing to attend training and assist functionally illiterate
individuals with the basic reading and writing skills.
-
ESOL tutors
who are willing to attend training and assist non-English
speaking students to learn English language speech and comprehension.
-
ESOL interviewers
to assess potential students for placement with appropriate tutor and
level of functioning.
-
Office workers
for one four-hour shift per week.
-
Computer operators
to assist in updating the student, volunteer, and donor database.
Collection of data is valuable in documenting achievement of goals, fund
raising, and promoting The Literacy Council of Sarasota.
-
Other skills—call
the office if you or someone you know has skills in fund raising, public
relations, public speaking, or special projects.
Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, but they share one common
trait: a willingness to donate personal leisure time to help others gain
the English language communication skills that allow them to become more productive
citizens and lead fuller, enriched lives.
