HOW DO I BECOME A
TUTOR?
1) Complete a volunteer/tutor application, 2) attend the New Volunteer
Orientation or arrange to meet at the LCS office, 3) attend a volunteer
interview, 4) complete three tutor training workshops.
Tutor training, materials and support are provided by LCS.
Tutor-student pairs generally meet at least once weekly and use
materials provided by the Council. Pairs meet in a library, community
center, or other public place that is convenient to both of them.
Flexible days and times available.
HOW
DO I GET HELP FROM THE LITERACY COUNCIL?
If you or someone you know would like to request a tutor, call LCS at
955-0421. Some basic information (name, address, phone number,
etc.) will be taken at that time. An appointment will be scheduled as
soon as possible.
During this appointment prospective students receive information
about the Council and its programs. We also take this opportunity to
identify the student's personal goals and to determine the student's
eligibility by using assessment tools.
Students are matched as soon as a tutor is available with a
compatible schedule and location. There is a one-time student
registration fee, and the student receives the first instructional
book at no cost.
HOW IS THE LITERACY
COUNCIL OF SARASOTA SUPPORTED?
The Council currently supports over 200 tutor/learner pairs. The
Council receives no government or United Way funding; it relies
entirely on private grants, membership dues and donations, and other
philanthropic contributions.
