ESOL PROGRAM
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), sometimes called
English as a Second Language (ESL), is taught to immigrants who need to
learn English or improve their English language skills to
live and work in the United States.
The ESOL program pairs a trained tutor with a student wishing to learn English or to improve his
or her speaking and comprehension of English,
as well as reading and writing.
The Literacy Council of Sarasota's volunteers work one-on-one with each student. Thus, the Council is
able to customize teaching to individual needs, providing a unique focus on
enabling students to function better within the frameworks of
their own life situations.
Increasing English language skills will improve the learners' potential for employment and enable effective communication, greatly increasing their quality of life and their ability to be contributing members of the community. The ESOL
program
also provides small group instruction.
